Club Member Questions

What do I need to do to become a club member?
  • Be 18 years or older
  • Complete your New Member Application (online or at club)
  • Be sure to complete your Needs Assessment
  • Visit your club to complete your biometrics
  • Your signature
  • A copy of your ID document
  • A selfie photo
  • Pay your GOAlite subscription and sign up for a minimum 6-month club membership
  • You will receive your unique GOA membership number and GOAlite login details.

For queries regarding your application status, please contact the club directly. (Club contact details are available under the 'Clubs' tab on the GOA website.)

Why do I need to submit a signature, ID, and photo to become a member?
  1. Membership Verification:
Your photo, signature, and ID are used to confirm your identity and ensure that your membership is accurately registered within the GOA system. These details help identify you when visiting your home club or any other GOA-affiliated club.
  2. Contractual Requirements:
These details are essential for the contracts created between you, as the owner member of plants and the cultivating member of your club. The lease agreements and employment contracts generated on the system use your signature, ID, and photo for legal verification and compliance purposes.
Can a person who is already a member of one club become a member of another club?

As a member of a GOA-affiliated club, you automatically gain access to all other GOA-affiliated clubs. However, you will have a designated home-base club where your primary membership is registered and managed. Your GOAlite subscription will grant you access to your home club’s information and sharing station, where you’ll be able to view and reserve items to collect at your convenience.

How much does it cost to become a club member?

Membership fees vary from club to club, as each GOA-affiliated club sets its pricing based on the facilities, services, and experiences provided, with some clubs charging no membership fees. Your initial club membership is a minimum of 6 months (length of a grow cycle).

To access the club’s sharing station you are required to have a GOAlite subscription. The subscription fees are as follows:

1 month – R20

6 months – R72 (R12 p/m)

1 year – R120 (R10 p/m)

What are the benefits of being a GOA club member?
  • A cultivating and processing member will be assigned to grow cannabis on your behalf.
  • Share and access cannabis at your club’s sharing station.
  • Enjoy a designated consumption area at your club, to consume your shared cannabis freely (where available).
  • Connect and relax with like-minded individuals in your local community.
  • Interact with experienced and knowledgeable bud tenders at the sharing station.
  • Attend educational workshops and social events hosted by the club.
  • Participate in club decisions by casting your vote at your club’s annual general meeting.
  • Visit any Grow one Africa affiliated club nationwide.
Are all GOA-associated clubs the same, like a franchise?

No, GOA-associated clubs are not part of a franchise.

Grow One Africa (GOA) serves as a service provider to independent cannabis social clubs, offering a Cannabis Grow Club Model with stringent compliance measures. This model is designed to operate within South Africa’s current cannabis legislation, focusing on responsible cannabis use, sharing, and cultivation while ensuring full traceability from seed to social club member.

Each club is independently owned and operated, meaning they may differ in the facilities and services they provide. While many clubs offer similar amenities, such as:

  • On-Consumption Areas: Spaces where members can smoke cannabis accessed from the sharing station.
  • Food & Drink: Some clubs provide refreshments for purchase.
  • Merchandise: Cannabis-related products and merchandise available for sale.
  • Communal Spaces: Areas for socializing, events, and workshops.

Not all clubs have the same offerings, so it’s best to check with your local club to see what facilities are available.

Can I share cannabis as soon as I sign up?

Yes, once you're a fully paid-up member, you can immediately access the sharing station and obtain cannabis from other members' completed harvests. While your own cultivation cycle takes approximately 6 months to complete, other Owner Members can share their available cannabis with you through GOAlite-managed sharing agreements.

When obtaining cannabis, you'll reimburse the sharing member for their proportional expenses (CPM costs and club fees) - covering actual costs, not profit. All sharing occurs within the club's designated sharing station.

How much cannabis can I share at my club’s sharing station in a month?

While GOA-associated clubs promote responsible cannabis use, they do not impose monthly sharing limits. However, the amount of cannabis you may share, is based on the initial allocation you submitted in your Member Needs Assessment based on your 30 day usage as well as the club rules of each individual club. These rules specify the maximum amount of sharing allowed, with most club not allowing more than 90g at any one time.

All sharing is recorded for compliance and traceability. This helps the club monitor responsible usage while maintaining transparency.

How secure is a member’s information, and how is it stored?

At Grow One Africa, we deeply value and respect the privacy of our members. We have implemented robust security measures to ensure that your personal information is protected at all times:

  1. Encrypted Database: Member information is stored in an encrypted database on a dedicated server with stringent firewall protections that severely limit access.
  2. Restricted Access: Only authorized staff at your club can view your full details, and this access is provided through a secure application designed with multiple layers of built-in security.
  3. Advanced Security Measures: To enhance protection, we use a well-reputed, proprietary full-stack security solution. This system incorporates machine learning to detect and defend against the latest threats.

While we’ve intentionally kept some details vague for security reasons, rest assured that safeguarding your data is our top priority. Your information is protected with industry-leading practices to ensure your peace of mind.

What happens to a member’s details when they cancel their GOA membership?

When a member cancels their GOA membership, we take measures to ensure compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) while maintaining necessary records for accountability:

  1. Anonymization of Personal Details:
    • The member’s name and contact information are replaced with the word "CANCELLED."
    • Their ID number is replaced with the date and time of cancellation.
  2. Retention of Non-Personal Records:
    • The membership’s valid-until date and original registration date are retained to preserve the historical sharing record.
    • The member’s Needs Assessment is also retained, as it contains no personal information.
  3. Purpose of Retention:
These records are used to justify the presence of plants and sharing activities in the system without compromising the member's privacy. While we can confirm that a member was part of the system, their identity remains protected.

This approach ensures we balance data privacy with operational integrity, maintaining compliance and accountability within the GOA network.

Can the Club or Grow one Africa cancel my membership?

Yes, your membership can be cancelled under the following circumstances:

  • Violation of Club Rules:
    • Your membership may be revoked if you are found to be in breach of any club rules or policies.
  • Criminal Activity:
    • Grow one Africa does not tolerate the use of its model, systems, or facilities for any criminal activities. If such activities are detected, GOA will cooperate fully with the authorities and may act as a witness for the State in legal proceedings.

Cultivating Processing Member (CPM) Questions

How do I become a cultivator and start growing cannabis for Grow one Africa?

Firstly, it’s important to note that you won’t be cultivating cannabis for Grow one Africa directly. Instead, you’ll be employed by one of your club members to cultivate cannabis on their behalf. To become a cultivator within the GOA network, you must be a club member with a valid member number.

Steps to becoming a CPM:

  • Once you’re a club member, discuss your cultivation or processing skills and experience with the Club Compliance Officer (CO).
  • The GOA model operates on a “supply follows demand” principle, so the CO will assess whether the club’s members have a demand for additional CPMs.
  • If demand exists at your club, your CO will assist you in getting your site compliant with GOA standards using GOAlite to submit your required information.

Types of CPMs:

  • Primary Cultivating or Processing Members:
    • Operates own cultivation or processing site.
    • Responsible for submitting site compliance requirements to receive a site certificate.
  • Assisting CPMs:
    • Work at a Primary CPM’s site, assisting with tasks such as cultivation, harvesting, processing, reporting or administration.
    • Only require a CPM Certificate to perform their duties.

How does cultivating for GOA work?

As a certified CPM (Cultivating and Processing Member), you will be assigned a fixed number of plants to grow based on the needs of your club(s). You can cultivate for multiple clubs if there is sufficient demand.

Your payment is structured as follows:

  1. Lease Agreement: You are reimbursed for the space the plant occupied during cultivation, based on a lease agreement between you and the OM (Owner Member).
  2. Employment Agreement: You are compensated for the work performed, including cultivating, harvesting, and curing of the plant. This is covered under a limited employment agreement with the OM.

Important: Reimbursement is for the effort, space, and services provided, not for the plant itself, ensuring compliance within South African laws.

How will I get paid for cultivating cannabis for a club?
  • A Grow one Africa cycle works from the 21st of each month to the 20th of the following month.
  • A stock take is performed by the club at close of day on the 20th of each month.
  • GOA performs a monthly reconciliation on the 21st of each month, to track all stock sent to the club(s) by each CPM, and invoices the clubs accordingly.
  • GOA then collects reimbursements from the clubs, deducting taxes (to maintain SARS compliance), and paying the net amount directly to the CPM via EFT.

This system ensures fairness, transparency, and compliance.

How much will I get paid per gram?

The amount you are reimbursed per gram, as a CPM, depends on the costs you incur during cultivation. You’ll need to calculate your expenses—including cultivation, harvesting, curing, and any other inputs—to determine your reimbursement rate. GOA provides a reimbursement calculator to assist you with this process. Your club Compliance Officer can also assist by providing insights into what other cultivators are reimbursed for similar products, ensuring that your calculations are fair, justified, and aligned with the club’s standards.

Is there a price difference between indoor and outdoor-grown cannabis?

Yes, there is typically a price difference between indoor and outdoor grown cannabis due to the higher costs associated with indoor cultivation.

Indoor cultivation requires more equipment, specialized supplies, and electricity to maintain optimal growing conditions, such as lighting, temperature, and humidity control. These additional expenses usually result in higher reimbursement rates for indoor grown cannabis compared to outdoor grown products.

Who decides on the type of strains to be grown?

Once a CPM is certified as compliant, they must submit a Cultivation Batch Plan to the Compliance Officer (CO) of the club they are cultivating for. The CO works closely with the CPM to evaluate the needs and preferences of the club's members. Together, they determine the specific strains required to meet those needs. This ensures that the cultivation aligns with member demands and club compliance standards.

How many plants can I grow at a time?

The number of plants you can cultivate at a time is determined by:

  • the number of members requiring cultivation services at your club,
  • how many members already have plants being cultivated for them by other CPMs.

It’s important to note that even if you have space to grow 100 plants on your compliant site, the club may only require cultivation for a smaller number, such as 10 plants. The allocation of plants is based on member needs rather than the available cultivation capacity at your site.

Can I sell excess cannabis to other people?

No, selling cannabis is still illegal in South Africa under the current legislation.

At Grow one Africa (GOA) affiliated clubs, no buying or selling of cannabis is permitted. Only cannabis grown by compliant cultivators, using GOAlite to track-and-trace all cannabis, can be responsibly shared among club members. This completes the closed loop, ensuring that only the necessary cannabis is being grown to fulfil the needs of the sharing members (so that the supply is indeed fulfilling the demand).

Social Club Questions

How many people are required to open a GOA club?

To open a GOA-affiliated social club, you’ll need:

  1. Founding Members: A minimum of 3 people to register the Non-Profit Company (NPC).
  2. Committee Members: A total of 5 people to serve on the club’s committee. The founding members, however, can also be part of this committee.

Ideally, a minimum of 5 individuals are necessary to meet the requirements for opening a club.

Can I open a GOA social club on the property where I live?

Yes, if certain conditions are met:

  1. Zoning Requirements: Your property must have business rights and be zoned for business use. Residential zoning does not permit the operation of a GOA social club.
  2. Compliance Measures: You must ensure that your property meets all of GOA’s club compliance measures, including security, accessibility, and operational standards.

If your property meets these criteria, opening a GOA social club could be a possibility. For more details, please reach out to the GOA team for guidance on the compliance process.

Must staff members working at the social club be members as well?

Yes, all staff members working at GOA-affiliated clubs are required to be GOA members.

A valid member number is necessary to create a staff login on GOAlite, ensuring secure access and proper integration into the club’s operations. This policy helps maintain compliance, accountability, and smooth functionality within the GOA network.

What functionality does GOAlite offer?

GOAlite is GOA's proprietary track-and-trace software platform that provides comprehensive supply chain management for the entire cannabis lifecycle from seed to social club sharing station. This sophisticated system serves as the technological backbone of GOA's compliance framework, ensuring that every gram of cannabis in the GOA network is fully traceable, compliant, and accountable from cultivation through to member consumption.

  • Cultivation compliance management – tracks every plant to ensure compliance.
  • Processing management - manages the conversion of plant material into cannabis items.
  • Demand analytics - ensures supply-demand matching.
  • Distribution control - manages dispatch from CPMs to clubs, ensuring real-time inventory requirements are met.
  • POS integration - real-time inventory management.
  • Assurance integration - enforces laboratory testing and further safety requirements.
  • Financial and compliance reporting – auto-generated detailed audit trails and reports for regulatory compliance.
  • Member management - capture and manage member details and preferences to ensure the ultimate member experience.
What are the subscription fees for clubs on GOAlite?

GOAlite Club Subscription Fees (depending on the option the club chooses)

Lite = R4 999.00 per month

Plus = R7 999.00 per month

Does the social club need to be at least 100m from the nearest school?

Currently, South Africa has no specific law regulating the distance between cannabis social clubs and schools or institutions where minors gather. However, considering international guidelines, and striving to adopt responsible practices, GOA recommends that clubs should be at least 200m from the entrance of any school or institution where minors regularly gather.

Why must clubs submit monthly financial compliance information on GOAlite?

Monthly financial compliance reviews are essential to ensure that all accounting is performed accurately and on time. This process provides transparency and gives both club members and Grow one Africa (GOA) confidence that the club’s NPC funds are being managed responsibly. This also ensures that all NPC financial compliance is on track for the annual financial independent review, which is required by the Company Act of 2008 and enforced by SARS.
